I'm saddened to hear of John's passing. I hired John at NQHS over 4 years ago for our special education department. His classroom was next to my office, so we talked daily. I retired this past June, and John was at my party. He sent me a nice letter of thanks for the time he worked with me and my staff at NQHS. He loved his job, always offered to help others, often tutored students before and after school on his own, had a great relationship with parents, and had a great sense of humor. I have since gone to work in a private special education school, but still heard from John via emails. I am leaving tomorrow on a trip during school vacation, so I won't be around for his services. I just want you to know he was a kind guy who enjoyed his new career, we enjoyed working with him, and he will be missed.

In memory of monahan!
His name was John Monahan, but I called him monahan. He was a great teacher to me in many different ways. What is a teacher? A teacher is someone who educates you with valuable lessons that you will need later in life. Monahan taught me valuable lessons that I will need later in life. Thank you for all the subjects that you have taught me, I will use all the lessons that you shared with me later in life, and also now. I will think of you when I walk up to get my diploma at graduation. thank you for being the person you were. I will miss you! Love Lauren castonguay

I was a student of Mr.Monahan's . I knew him since I was a freshman He was a funny guy to be around. He taught me alot about everyday life and helped me with alot of school stuff as well. John Monahan was one of the best teacher ever. He was one of the very few teachers who taught with a passion. I didn't just lost a teacher but a friend too. We may not be able to see him but he will always be here as long as he is in our heart! I'm sorry for your lost.

Lisa and I would like to thank all of you for sharing your memories and kind words of my brother John. He loved to teach and spend time with the students. He truly cared about each one of his students and wanted them to excel. I truly believe my brother finally found his passion in life...teaching.

Members of the Quincy Education Association grieve the loss of our colleague John Monahan. We'll miss his humor and intelligence; the students will miss his wonderful talents as a teacher. We've made a donation to the Scituate Animal Shelter in his memory, as the notice suggested. Ave atque vale, John!

This year, my second at NQHS, I was given the privilege of teaching the freshman inclusion math classes. John was the SPED teacher assigned to co-teach the classes with me. We quickly became friendly, realizing that our approaches and philosophies were in sync. Thanks to John, we were able to put in place a couple of classes for these kids that they enjoyed and were able to do well in. I could not have done it without him. I was worried about co-teaching, but he made it easy for me. Not only that, he made it easy for the kids in the class.
I do not know what you know of John. But what I know of him, after only a few months of working with him, is that the SPED kids at NQHS have lost a saint. I could not have quickly become the effective inclusion teacher that I am without him. And I would not have had to deal with 28 crying, shocked and devastated children if he wasn't such a great man.
John Monahan will go down as one of the few intrinsically good people to walk this earth. While I will miss him, I do not grieve for my loss, or for the loss felt by friends and family. I grieve for the kids that lost the best mentor and teacher they ever had.
