Shirley Enegess

May 1, 1922 — January 21, 2020

Shirley M. (Lewis) Enegess, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2020.  While she had often said she would live to be 100, she came pretty close, passing a few months shy of her 98th birthday.  She was the surviving spouse of Norman “Len” Enegess, and was the beloved mother of David Enegess of Litchfield NH, Barry Enegess of Charleston SC, and Karen Enegess of Boston MA.  She is also survived by her 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law Jane and Joanne, Karen’s partner Steve, and niece and nephews Bonnie, Rex and Craig Lewis in Maine.

Originally of Belmont, MA, she married in 1945 and raised her family in Oak Hill Park in Newton after WWII. “Sherrey and Lenny” later retired to South Yarmouth, Cape Cod, in 1983.  Her last 5 years were spent in assisted living and then Sherrill House skilled nursing where she engaged in community and kept people smiling with her cheerfulness and dry humor.

She graced the lives of many with the generosity of her open heart, her patience, and desire to care for others and be helpful.  She had been a dedicated homemaker and devoted wife until Lenny’s passing in 1995.   Her greatest joy was being surrounded by her family.  “My 3 kids” was a common phrase and they gave her pride and joy.  She enjoyed simple pleasures, such as chatting over coffee with a close friend; she loved the ocean, children, animals, flowers, birds, a “hot cuppa” and relaxing with a good movie.  Her faith was a source of strength, and she was a long-time active member of the United Methodist Church of Newton and then of South Yarmouth, and volunteered in both churches.  In her desire to be helpful and feel useful, she chose to donate her body to science.   It currently resides at Tufts Medical School to support the education of future medical professionals.

A memorial service/celebration of life will be held March 7th at the Newton United Methodist Church, 430 Walnut St., Newtonville MA 02460, at 1:00, with reception to follow from 2:00 - 4:00, and all are welcome to attend either or both.

Donations may be made in Shirley’s name to Sherrill House, Special Care Program Therapeutic Activities (for information contact Pattyanne Lyons, plyons@sherrillhouse.org , 617-735-1706).
