George J. Chiros of Middleboro formerly of Whitman passed away Monday October 25, 2010 at the South Shore Hospital surrounded by his family. He was 93. George was born in Whitman and was a resident for 89 years before moving to his daughter’s house in Middleboro. He graduated from Whitman High School in 1935, starring in baseball and football. He went to Maine Central Institute and played baseball and football. He graduated from Tufts College in 1940, also playing baseball and football. His sophomore year he was chosen to the Sword & Shield Honorary Society, and junior year chosen to the Ivy Honor Society. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps 316 th Troop Carrier Group during WW II and was discharged with the rank as Major. He taught Biology for over 25 years at Whitman-Hanson Regional High School and Scituate High School. He was a member of Retired Teachers Association. Member of Whitman VFW Post 697 and the American Legion Post 22. He was a communicant of Holy Ghost Parish in Whitman and Sacred Heart Parish in Middleboro. His passion was volunteering at My Brother’s Keeper in Easton. He is the son of the late George N & Louisa J. Chiros. Husband of the late Alberta (Murphy) and Helen (Mackiewicz) Chiros.

He is survived by son James F. Chiros of Jamaica Plain, daughters Mary Ann Lavine of Middleboro, Georgiana Griffin of Haines City, FL, and Christina Justason of Hanson. Brother of Francis L. of CA, and the late Jennie L. Burke, Marguerite M. Harlow, Dr. Nicholas F, and Peter J. Chiros. Also survived by 5 grandchildren who include special granddaughter, Lauren H. Boucher of Middleboro, and 4 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting Hours in the MacKinnon Funeral Home, 760 Washington St., WHITMAN on Thursday Oct. 28 th 4-7 pm.

A Funeral Mass will be on Friday in Holy Ghost Church, Whitman at 10 am. Relatives and friends invited to attend. Interment at St. James Cemetery in Whitman.
