Kevin McCarthy: 9/5/1962 – 10/18/2020

It is with broken hearts that we inform you that Kevin passed away suddenly on October 18, 2020 due to cardiac arrest. Kevin, OFD, lived most of his life in Weymouth, and proudly graduated from Weymouth Vocational Technical School in 1980.

Kevin is predeceased by his parents, Claire (Sullivan) and Eugene J. McCarthy. He is survived by his siblings, Mary Hurney and her husband Michael of Jonesborough, TN; Catherine Anderson and her husband, Jon of Bridgewater, MA; Teresa Byrne and her husband Paul, of Northbridge, MA; Barbara Hughes and her husband Dan, of Weymouth, MA; and his brother Gerard McCarthy and his wife, Christine of Weymouth, MA.  He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, who he loved dearly:  Patrick Hurney of Jonesboro, TN; Melissa Bowen and her children, Cameron (currently stationed at Ft. Knox), Hunter, and Montana of Jonesboro, TN; Cassidy Farrell of Los Angeles, CA; Kathleen Stein and her husband, Dana, and their children, Jackson & Jameson, of Taunton, MA; Jenny McCarthy of Weymouth, MA; and Michael and Steven Anderson of Bridgewater, MA.

Kevin had a special connection with each of his nieces and nephews, and loved being with all family, whether it was a holiday, during a sports game, or just a fun get-together.

Kevin worked many years for Williams Coal & Oil and later for Courier Printing.  He most recently performed day-labor jobs, with his favorite being setting up and breaking down for concert events at Fenway Park.

Kevin struggled with alcoholism and lived at Fr. Bill’s in Quincy for the last two years, where his health had improved as he took advantage of the resources and programs they offered, including a walking club. He was disappointed when the club disbanded, but he continued his walking.  Kevin had a zeal for being outdoors, walking several miles at a time some days.  A favorite destination was Great Esker Park, where he would spend hours walking from one end to the other.  Kevin was also an avid reader and spent many days at the library immersing himself in books.

Alcohol remains the most widely used substance of abuse. We pray that if you or a loved one has an alcohol addiction that you seek professional help.

The family would like to express our gratitude and appreciation for the EMTs from Brewster EMS Ambulance, the State Police South Boston, and Quincy City ER for their extraordinary efforts to save Kevin’s life.

We are eternally grateful for the support, advice, shelter, and feeling of safety that Father Bill’s Place provided Kevin. If anyone would like to make a donation in Kevin’s memory, please send to: Father Bill’s & MainSpring, 430 Belmont Street, Brockton MA, 02301, or https://helpfbms.org/donate/ .

Due to the current Covid-19 situation, services will be private.
