William P. ("Bill") Thomas of Rockland, MA, passed away on July 8, 2025, at the age of 86. He is survived by his cherished wife of 68 years, Mary, and their children: Lynn Westgate and her husband Ed, Kathleen Werthen, and William Thomas Jr. and his wife Robin. Bill was a proud grandfather to Steven, Andrew, and Daniel Werthen; Jessica MacDonald; Ryan and Alyson Thomas; and Christina Westgate. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Mervyn Thomas, as well as his daughter, Cynthia Thomas.
Bill embraced life fully. His determination and strength were evident in every chapter of his journey, especially in the courage he showed during his final days. He was well-known for his industrious and friendly demeanor, marked by an exceptional work ethic. Throughout his career, he balanced work as a machinist in manufacturing while also serving as an auto mechanic. In his later years, he earned the affectionate nickname "lawnmower man" in his neighborhood, a testament to his love for restoring and repairing lawnmowers.
His hobbies included fishing "off the dock," listening to classic country music, taking rides in his 1988 truck with his wife, and passionately supporting Boston sports teams, especially the Red Sox—"Go Sox!" Above all, Bill treasured the time spent with family and friends. He often said that when he passed, he would relax on a heavenly couch with his dear friends and beloved daughter who predeceased him, cheering on the Red Sox together. He is now at peace. May God bless him and all who have gone before him, and may they find joy and tranquility together. May Bill's memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
A service to honor Bill's life will be held at a later date.
