Albert R. Atwood of East Bridgewater passed away Friday April 29, 2011 after a long life. He was 96. Husband of the late Mildred (Marlow) Atwood.  Albert was born in Marshfield and grew up in Green Harbor. He has been a resident of East Bridgewater for over 60 years. He was a WW II U.S. Army Disabled Veteran and former P.O.W. for 9 months during WW II and recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans Brockton Chapter # 76 since 1959. He served as commander in 1962 and 1973. Former Adjutant for 6 years, graves registration for 10 years, Judge Advocate for 5 years, and Chaplain for 4 years. He was former member and chaplain for 15 years of American Ex Prisoner of War, Southeastern MA Chapter. Member of Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge. Member of Hanson AA.  Albert worked as a Machinist for Brockton Tool Co. retiring in 1981. After retiring he enjoyed woodworking and made furniture for family and friends. Al was also a huge Red Sox fan.

He is survived by five daughters Audrey Cooper of VA, Roberta Barnes of VA, Merri Garren, Theresa Sampson, and Kelly Brown all of East Bridgewater. He is the last survivor of 13 siblings. Also survived by 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours in the MacKinnon Funeral Home 760 Washington St., WHITMAN on Monday May 2 nd 2-4 &7-9 pm.

A Funeral service will be held on Tuesday in the funeral home at 11 am. Relatives and friends invited to attend.

A burial will be held at a later date at Blue Hills Cemetery in Braintree.
