Deirdre Murphy

September 28, 1957 — September 23, 2012

Deirdre Murphy age 55, died peacefully at her home in Provincetown on September 23, 2012.She was the beloved daughter of Frances (Shellenback) Murphy of South Natick, and the late Dr. Albert Murphy, and dear sister of Sheila Murphy of Boxborough, Sean of Framingham, Kevin of Cookeville, TN, Brian of Scituate, Terence of Herndon, VA, Rory of Abington, and their families, as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. Deirdre attended Skidmore College, and continued her life of adventure and learning as she travelled extensively, especially in Southeast Asia., which was her field of study.  She lived for a time in Germany, and then in Bali, immersing herself in the culture and language and becoming part of a family whom she loved dearly. She spent time also in the Carolinas, owning a small home on the rural coast, a place of peace and respite for her. Deirdre began sailing as a camper, then counselor at Camp Wono in East Brewster where her sailing abilities were legend. In recent years Provincetown became Deirdre’s home, and for several seasons her passion for sailing was rewarded as she became first  mate on the wooden Schooner Hindu. In every place she lived, Deirdre leaves behind her many friends to mourn the loss of the unique and spirited person she was.

According to her wishes, Deirdre was cremated, her ashes to be scattered in the waters of Provincetown Harbor at a later date. Her friends in Provincetown will hold a Celebration of her life on Sunday, October 14, at 3p.m. at the VFW Hall, 3 Jerome Smith Rd., Provincetown.

A memorial Mass will be offered in Deirdre’s name on Saturday, October 27, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Wellesley. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
