Dipa Bhattacharya

Dipa Bhattacharya, age 81, of Canton, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2020 surrounded by her son and his family. Dipa was the loving wife of the late Himangshu Bhattacharya until his passing five years ago. Born in 1939 and raised in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh (India), she was the daughter of the late Gour Chandra Mukherjee and Ashoka Chatterjee Mukherjee.
Receiving a master's degree in Psychology from Banaras Hindu University in 1961, Dipa traveled across the globe to North America and was a homemaker for about 50 years.
Her first arrival was to Quebec City, Canada for a few years before arriving to Massachusetts, where she resided on St. Germain Street while working at the Christian Science Center in Boston before settling in Randolph, MA with her husband and relatives.
She was quite creative with the pen, writing short stories and poems in her native language which were published in both local and regional Bengali literary publications. Her creativity kindly contributed to various written, poetic gesture and recitations for her friends and family at celebratory gatherings like wedding and showers, birthdays, and graduations.
Although she could be perceived as shy and reserved to outsiders, she was a true social butterfly at heart. She found comfort and joy simply interacting with friends and family - whether it be on the phone or just hanging out for a cup of coffee to what people in Bengali culture affectionally refer to as
'chaa -adda'
(coffee chat). Her connection to working at the Cristian Science Center was appropriate for she often engaged with others outside her culture to better understand about the customs and religions of other folks outside her heritage and ancestry.
Dipa was the loving mother of Subrata Bhattacharya and his wife Mitti of Canton; She leaves behind two adoring grandchildren (and housemates) Brinden and Trisha.
She also leaves behind the members of her family that shared the journey from Varanasi to New England with her - brother Shome Mukherjee, and his wife Bani of Braintree; niece Swati Sharma and her husband Manindra of Manchester, N.H.; brother-in-law Ashok Bhattacharya of Brockton. Finally, she leaves behind nieces, nephews, and their families as well as several members of the Bengali community that were near and dear to her heart.
