Guy Holbrook, Iii

September 15, 1936 — January 28, 2020

Guy C. Holbrook III, of Duxbury, MA, passed away suddenly on January 28, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 56 years, Laurine; a son Guy IV, his wife Amy, and their children Sarah, Guy V, and Welles; and his daughter Heidi, her husband Sam Kalil, and their children Max, Jack, and Samantha (along with her husband Aaron McFadden and their three children).

Guy was born on September 15, 1936, on Long Island, NY, to Guy C. and Mary-Estelle (Palmquist) Holbrook Jr. He attended The Storm King School and Marshfield High School and graduated from Newton High School. From there Guy joined the United States Marine Corps—serving three years as he toured throughout Asia and the Middle East; he was a highly decorated marksman. He spent time as a ski instructor at Black Mountain in New Hampshire and a tennis instructor in Marshfield, MA.

After attending the University of New Hampshire, Guy and Laurine married and bought a house in Marshfield. They settled permanently in Duxbury, where Guy created many lasting and wonderful relationships and was known for his fun-loving and playful manner. He worked in the sales division at Carter Rice Storrs & Bement, Inc.; later in his career, Guy became a financial advisor for A.G. Edwards & Sons and then Tucker Anthony & R.L. Day; most recently he retired from First Union Securities.

A dedicated husband and father, Guy shared his passions with his wife and children. He was an avid and accomplished sailor who felt most at home on his sailboat as he and Laurine sailed the entire East Coast for nearly six decades together, venturing from Canada to the Bahamas. Favorite cruising spots included the Buzzards Bay area, where he kept his sailboat Tradition, and all along the Maine Coast—leading to countless memorable and exciting adventures for both family and friends. On land, Guy was a nationally ranked Platform Tennis player, but also enjoyed competing on the tennis courts where he won numerous Duxbury Yacht Club Championships. Guy enjoyed competing on the golf course as well—though admittedly with not quite as much success. His fellow and cherished members of the Wharf Rats and the Model T Club will miss him dearly, as will his fellow U.S. Marines. He was a long-time member of the Duxbury Yacht Club, Beverly Yacht Club, and Pilgrim Church. Guy volunteered tirelessly as Chairman of the Board for the Cranberry Area Hospice of Plymouth after beating another one of his opponents—this time his first victory over cancer.

There will be a private memorial followed by a Celebration of Life later this spring. Donations in his memory or in lieu of flowers may be made to the Duxbury Bay Maritime School—Veterans and Outreach Programs at DBMS.org.
