Humphrey Daniel ("Dan") Zabriskie, 78, passed away on December 22, 2011 at the Oxford Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center in Haverhill, Massachusetts.
Born in Newburyport on July 5, 1933 to the late Albert C. and Helena (Howard) Zabriskie, and raised there, Dan was graduated from Governor Dummer Academy (now The Governor's Academy) in Byfield, Massachusetts in 1952, and from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York in 1957. He served two years in the United States Navy, then earned his law degree from Portia Law School (now the New England School of Law) in 1962. Dan began his legal career in the Essex County District Attorney's office in Lynn, Massachusetts, and entered into the private practice of law thereafter.
His survivors include his three children: Daniel and his wife Sarah of Northampton, Massachusetts; Michael, his wife Michelle, and their children Ashley, Michael, Jack, Daniel, and Luke of Derry, New Hampshire; and Linda and her husband Jeffrey Noble of New York City.
Dan was the youngest of eight siblings, all of whom predeceased him: Albert, the former mayor of Newburyport from 1960 to 1963, and State Representative; Margaret, a registered nurse; Howard ("Flash"), who was killed in the Battle of Bougainville Island during WWII; Donald, former principal of Newburyport High School; Ethel, a registered nurse; Joseph, a psychologist; and John, a pharmacist and businessman.
A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at Immaculate Conception Church in Newburyport, with burial to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Newburyport.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mayor Albert H. Zabriskie Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Newburyport High School, 241 High Street, Newburyport, MA 01950.
