Jane Newman

December 15, 1922 — May 17, 2021

Remembering the life and death of Holocaust survivor Jane Newman.

Jane Newman, born Caecilie Johanna Theuman, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2021, in her home at Benchmark Assisted Living on Clapboardtree in Norwood, Ma. at the age of 98.

Jane was the beloved daughter of Rudolf and Jeni Theuman.  She was known as “Hansi” in her early years in Europe, “Janie” by family and friends in America, and as “G.G” by her great grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by her beloved son Roger and her dedicated and loving husband Ernest.  Surviving Jane are her daughter Audrey, son in law Dale and family, and the children of relatives that had also survived the Holocaust.

Jane was born Dec. 15, 1922 in Vienna, Austria and was forced to flee alone to England at the age of 14. While in England, she learned of her parent’s internment and subsequent death in a concentration camp in Riga, Latvia.  Despite her misfortunes, Jane always saw the glass as half full, never felt sorry for herself, put others needs before her own, and was eternally grateful for the life she had.  She cherished each day and had an amazing gift to adapt, no matter the circumstances.  Jane was defined not only by her vast knowledge, quick wit, keen intellect, and worldliness, but also by her humility, noble character, and personal values.

Jane was a loving and dedicated mother and wife.  When her children were young she volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout den mother, chaperon for school field trips, and administrator of her husband’s business.  When her children were older, she re-joined the workforce, utilizing her French and German language skills as manager of the foreign book department at her brother’s book company.  She was an avid reader and appreciator of literature, music, and history.  Post retirement Jane enjoyed writing poetry and applying her newly discovered artistic talents.
Jane’s family will be deeply and forever grateful for the incredible care, love, and support of the Hospice caregivers and the entire staff of Benchmark Assisted Living.

Jane’s loss is immeasurable but so is the love she left behind.

Friends and family are invited for a celebration of Jane’s life to be held at Benchmark Assisted Living.
