Maureen Concannon, born Mary Sheila Munnelly, 85, passed away on the morning of Tuesday, March 16th, 2021, at home in her bed, surrounded by family, in Wilbraham, MA.
A first generation Irish- and Scottish-American, Maureen was born in New York, NY in 1935. Her late parents, Anne and James Munnelly, immigrated to New York City from Glasgow, Scotland in 1929. She was predeceased by her two siblings, Isabelle McDermott of Keansburg, NJ and Patrick Munnelly of Spring Hill, FL.
Maureen graduated from Holy Union Juniorate in Tiverton, RI and attended Holy Union Novitiate, in Fall River, MA. She worked at the First National City Bank of New York.
She met the love of her life, John “Jack” Joseph Concannon, in “the Irish Catskills” of upstate New York where he was performing with his band, The Claddagh Ring Band. They married at St. Ann’s Church in Keansburg, NJ and had a wonderful life together for more than 60 years before his passing in 2016.
They lived in Braintree, MA and had five children. Their home was known for delicious food, warm hugs, and deep laughter. They loved to entertain and they especially loved having friends and family together.
Maureen was a talented artist skilled in oil painting, ceramics, and crochet. She established a ceramics business with her sister-in-law and friend Dorothy Concannon and taught others how to make and paint ceramics. She was known for her beautiful oil paintings, which often depicted the beaches of Hawaii, where Maureen and Jack vacationed frequently. The Song “A Fresh Lei Each Day” by their friends Keith and Carmen Haugen of HI was written about Jack’s daily tradition of buying Maureen a new floral lei each day of their trips.
She is survived by her daughters, Gail Concannon-Popp and husband John Popp of Wilbraham, MA, Linda Gilbert and husband Thomas of Weymouth, MA, Carol Leone and husband Robert of Whitman, MA, Diane Forrand and husband Eric of Holbrook, MA, her son, Stephen Concannon of FL, seventeen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. All of whom she loved greatly.
At Maureen’s request, no wake will be held. A virtual mass will be led by Fr. David Huffman of OH, cousin of son-in-law John Popp. A burial service will occur at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA, where she will be laid to rest with her beloved husband Jack, a decorated veteran of the US Navy who served during the Korean War.
