Matthew Edward Montefusco

Born on January 29, 1958 in New Haven, Connecticut, Matthew Montefusco died September 4, 2020 at the VA Medical Center in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. He was 62 years old. He was a longtime resident of Cohasset, Massachusetts.

Matthew was the fourth of five children born to Louis and Cynthia Montefusco (nee Moore). He spent the first part of his growing up in Branford, Connecticut; the second leg in Chester, New Jersey; and by the time he graduated high school, he and his family were living in Blandford, Massachusetts.

Matt is survived by all of his adoring siblings: Marc, Megan, Melissa and Maria. (Yes, all “M”s and no, not a coincidence. He liked to sign his notes to family with “M4”.)

He is also survived by his children, Matthew and Emma Montefusco, as well as their mother Dianne Montefusco (nee O’Sullivan), his mother Cynthia, and his most beloved brother-in-law, Allan O’Keefe. He leaves behind all of his nieces and nephews, almost all of his cousins near and far, his much loved uncle Douglass Moore, and many, many, many friends.

Matthew started his academic career at the Branford Hills School in Branford, Connecticut. He continued his education at the William Morris School in Chester, New Jersey -- where they are probably still buzzing about his scene-stealing performance as Officer Brannigan in the eighth-grade production of “Guys and Dolls.”

He attended and graduated high school at Gateway Regional High School after his family moved to Blandford. Not long after his arrival there, he became a valued and lifelong member of the “Blandford Buzz Team (BBT).”  Though not in any way, shape or form associated with academic excellence, this affiliation was as important to Matt as any award or honor. He treasured that association and those friendships throughout his life.

After graduation from high school, Matt enlisted in the Army, where he was assigned to the Watercraft branch. Achieving the rank of SP4 and having the opportunity to serve his county in the military are among his proudest achievements. Among, but not the only; his graduation from Westfield State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics was a very proud day for him as well.

Matt went on to create Oasis Environmental Contracting Services. Anyone who knew Matthew knows his work life, his business, was extremely important to him -- and if you know that, you must know he was quite possibly the hardest working person in the world.

Son, brother, student, actor, friend, soldier, husband, entrepreneur, and artist, it was becoming a Father - something he was not always convinced was in the cards for him - that became the most important responsibility in Matt’s life. He not only loved his children, Matty and Emma, he liked and respected them, and knew that with their mother Dianne to support and guide them, they would survive and even excel in this world that seems, at times, so crazy.

Optimistic and joyful; circumspect and guarded. Matthew Edward Montefusco was a complicated, loving and lovely man. We already miss him more than he would have ever thought, but just as much as he could have hoped.

I think Matt would smile as we send him off with a sentiment best expressed by Judy Garland (finger snaps and all), “Forget your troubles, come on get happy! You better chase all your cares away!”

His family is planning to hold an event in Matt’s honor next spring and would very much like all who loved Matt to attend. Please sign the guest book with your contact information if you’d like to be included.
